Vox Populi! - The Teen Recordings

Unreleased recordings, France, 1979-1981

When I wrote Axel Kyrou that I wished to post the debut Vox Populi! cassette, "Introduction À La Théorie De La Subjectivité Relative", he answered that before I do so, he would like to offer earlier VP! recordings for sharing. He also sent the visual above and wrote the following statement to introduce these recordings :

'The Teen Recordings' were recorded between 1979 and 1981. These are the first and, yet, unreleased recordings by Vox Populi! As the title suggests, I made them during my teens (I'm from 1964), with some help from my elder brother Ariel on vocals, jaw's harp and percussion. I play synth, radio waves, video games, tapes, bass, guitar, jaw's harp and voices. I must say that we had a very encouraging family environment. Our father Ado was a great fan of any kind of unusual and extreme forms of music. I remember very well my father's PA being blown out by one of the first Whitehouse recordings ! He was a TV/film director and a writer. My mother Mireille is a musician and she had worked under Pierre Schaeffer's direction for a few years at the institution that became soon after the IRCAM. For sure, they were on our side and they did help in many ways. A big Thank is due to them.
I hope you'll enjoy these goofy DIY recordings made with very little means.
Wishing to you music lovers all the best,
Axel, for Vox Populi!

PS : apart from Nostalgie de la boue, you'll find many other VP! releases on 3 other musical blogs :
http://thethingonthedoorstep.blogspot.com/

It is our deliberate policy to make most of our music freely available. Vox Populi! returns to Populi, so...

The Legendary Pink Dots - Live In Paris, Rex Club, 6/02/87

Cassette, C90
Live recording, 1987

I've recorded that live concert myself, with the band's authorization. At the end of the concert, I met a guy from the audience who asked me to send him the live recording, which I did once back in hometown ; a few weeks later, he sent me the cassette cover I've included in the rip. I've never really known (and never asked) if it was a personal cover he made for himself or if he used my recording for an unofficial bootleg cassette release...
Anyway, that was a wonderful concert, and I hope the sound is not too bad...

NSI - "M" Plays Havoc

LP
Label : Unknown, France, 1989
Limited edition of 500 copies

NSI was the musical project of a french guy, Jean-Philippe Charpentier, who passed away at the age of 21, in 1988. One of his friends, who had collaborated with him on a few NSI recordings, then decided to release that LP of unreleased material. Unfortunately, that record never received the distribution it deserves and is now impossible to find... The music is dark, ambient, repetitive, with a ritual touch and a few haunting voices. A personal favourite.

Dark Alceste De Socaï Vômie - Tristesse Psychotronique

LP
Label : RRR, US, 1991

This is Dark Alceste De Socaï Vômie (alias Marc Alhanati) debut LP, one of the few LPs by french artists on RRR label (after X-Ray Pop and Le Syndicat). The second record by Dark Alceste De Socaï Vômie was a mini CD released by SFCR. The third and last record, released under the artist name Dark Vomal Âme-Code, is a CD that is quite obscure and not distributed anymore.
By the early 90s, Marc Alhanati once told me that the tracks he was creating were longer than any available tape lengths, so he could not record them complete. Mp3 has appeared since then but Marc has disappeared. If you read this, Marc, and have unreleased mp3s you would like to share, please let me know...

blackhumour - two women : san francisco 1988

Cassette, C60
Label : SPH, Portugal, 1992

"in june 1988, blackhumour travelled with g.x. jupitter-larsen from vancouver to san francisco to perform on a bill with amk/gx and the haters at the now-defunct 455 gallery, as part of blackhumour's entropy in action series of live audio performances.
during that visit, blackhumour conducted a series of interviews with young women working in one of the tenderloin's higher-class massage establishments, women who shared generously their unique voices with bh. these interviews were used as primary source material for penetration (harsh reality music, 1990). several sketches using that material were also done at this time, among them a series of extended audio-portraits using techniques developed during the recording of breathing like marcel (corrosive tapes, 1987). those familiar with these works should recognize some shared themes.

blackhumour audio uses found object human voice, analog and digital editing only. no effects; no reverb. no speed- or back-masking."

blackhumour - peace in our time

CD
Label : We Never Sleep, US, 1993

"The blackhumour audio project had its beginnings in early 1982 with the first few experiments I was doing on my teac 4-track reel-to-reel recorder. The resulting early pieces were not so good, but some of the pieces which were done with my then audio-partner, somebody else, were successful. Two of these pieces, 'murder', and 'trade and commerce', are included in the retrospective of early bh work, 'radical positive' (banned productions). This release also shows the evolution of the blackhumour approach away from treatment/effects techniques of any kind, such as equalization, reverberation. Flanging, echo, etc., and the choice made by blackhumour to use as its sole sound-construction source the use of 'found-object' human voice only, with the exclusion of such tape techniques as speed-masking (speeding up or slowing down the sound of the voice) or back-masking (the notorious technique of playing the voices backwards). Since 'snakes in an atheist's grave' (1984), NO blackhumour piece has used anything other than found object (spoken) human voice and editing techniques. (since 1986, digital editing has been included, thanks to inexpensive digital sampling.) I wanted the sound source to be absolutely basic. The human voice speaking was about as basic as i could get. The rationale being that we are constantly hearing speech, whether it is from others, or simply the sound of our own voices in our ears."

That CD was previously released as a cassette in 1988.

Various Artists - Compulsory Overtime

LP
Label : Dasein, UK, 1985

On that compilation, it looks like Bourbonese Qualk, The Legendary Pink Dots and Stress are lost among punk bands. Their three tracks, each one in his own style, are very great.
The Legendary Pink Dots' "A Message From Our Sponsor" track is version 1. A very different version was released the same year on the "Asylum" 2LP. That version 1 was later re-released on "Stained Glass Soma Fountains" 2CD, but it sounds like it's a different mix and the LP version is a bit longer. Anyway, a wonderful track !
