Mireille Kyrou / Vox Populi! - Experimental Lineage

Audiofiles
Label : Nostalgie De La Boue [ndlb#132], Ivory Coast, 2019

" This release is composed of the only two recorded works by musique concrète pioneer Mireille Kyrou (1931-2017), and of ‘Koro Wild’, played and composed by her son Axel Kyrou, main member of Vox Populi!

Mireille Kyrou was born in September of 1931 in the town of Cairo. Her mother was French and her father was part of a family that migrated from Palestine to Egypt.
She studied piano from an early age and was sent in 1955 to Paris to complete her musical learning. She studied harmony with the famous French composer Olivier Messiaen for two years, before joining the GRM (Groupe de Recherche Musicale) in 1958, the experimental music research center which had just been created by Pierre Schaeffer, the inventor of musique concrète some ten years before.
There, the working time was divided in two. Working on her own music, using the top-notch equipment available there, while trying to create the equivalent of the classical musical notation for musique concrète. If this new music had the ambition of becoming the new classical music, it had to be writable and reproductible, as much as the ‘old’ one. The results were to be found in Pierre Schaeffer’s main book, Le traité des objets musicaux, released in 1966, though it eventually ended as a failure, as history confirmed.
She quit the GRM in 1961 to devote herself to family life, raising two sons, Ariel, born in 1962, and Axel, born in 1964. She married Ado Kyrou, a Greek film director and writer, very close to the surrealist group of the 50s and early 60s. He’s mostly known for his book Le surréalisme au cinéma, which was translated in several languages.

The only available recorded track by Mireille Kyrou is ‘Etude 1’, released on the mythical album from 1964, ‘Musique Concrète’, edited by Philips, also featuring music from giants of musique concrète, such as Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, or Luc Ferrari. The main sound sources for this track were a comb and a feather.

The second track featured here, ‘Film Musique’, is unreleased, and recorded in the same environment and historical period as ‘Etude 1’. It is the soundtrack of an experimental film, which nothing seems to be known about. Although Mireille thought that the track wasn’t supposed to be listened without the film, she eventually agreed to release it.

Mireille had a peculiar love for the Vox Populi! track called ‘Koro Wild’ and insisted that it would be played at her funeral. It proved to be a strong experience, felt by all friends and members of the family attending the ceremony.
‘Koro Wild’ was recorded over a long period, 1994 to 2007, in France, Japan and Burkina Faso. All field recordings and instruments done and played by Axel Kyrou. First released on taâlem. "

Axel Kyrou

Vox Populi! - Half Dead Ganja Music

Audiofiles
Label : Nostalgie De La Boue [ndlb#92], Ivory Coast, 2017

Official net-re-release celebrating the 30th anniversary of the cassette album. Remastered by Axel Kyrou for the 2013 vinyl re-release that is now deleted. Here are a few excerpts of the LP's reviews :

"Like a misty dream upon timeless beaches where female phantoms dance about bringing comforting company which touches beyond flesh."

"This Half Dead cassette turned LP from 1987 sounds like a band improvising an exotic musique concrete Voodoo Ritual in the Catacombs below, and above, EARTH. Half Dead Ganja Music exists as a rare artifact of a timeless endeavor to create a feeling, through self-less creativity, of a limbo realm between physical earth realities and the mystical realm that is paralleled in our emerging beings. This is Occult music without pretension, but with effortless release to the juxtaposition of human and non-human senses."

"The latter's favorite. Half dead ganja music? No doubt. Mellowtonic bearddrone bongscrape made right via heady ritual aromas obscuring distant fumble-clunk and dazed mumble-grunt... just crank that bass and revel in Throb Almighty."

"Layers and layers of processed tape and hazy, wordless female vocals like a baklava, sweetened with drone instead of honey. However there’s something oddly uplifting about this music and very, very beautiful."

"It’s a trip in any sense of the term, transporting us via twelve succinct studio and live recordings across fields of Persian-influenced vocal glossolalia, airborne drones and sparse drum machine pulses to mind-swallowing vortices of synth swirl, but never letting anything settle for too long, always discreetly segueing to another part of the same hallucination before spreading out some more with an expansive live finale. Highly recommended!"

Vox Populi! - Aither +

Audiofiles
Label : Nostalgie De La Boue [ndlb#36], Ivory Coast, 2013

Last months have been a prolific period for Vox Populi! re-releases, as will be next ones. After "La Cathédrale Morte" (net-release), "Ébats Spirituels" (net-release), "Half Dead Ganja Music" (LP), here is the net-re-release of "Aither", the second Vox Populi! LP from 1989, with 3 unreleased tracks from the same period, all remastered by Axel Kyrou in 2013. "Aither" sounds like a synthesis of the different music styles the band has developed during the 1980s. It was originally released by Visa, a famous french independant label, and some of the tracks were included on the "1987-1990" CD released by Infrastition in 2008, but the entire album is available again for the first time.
More is coming. Very soon will be released "Funk Off" (CD), a compilation of early 80s tracks by Vox Populi! and Pacific 231. And finally, in the fall of 2014, Vinyl-on-demand will release a Vox Populi! vinyl boxset (2LP + 7" for members) with 130 minutes of music from the 1982-1988 period, including their complete first LP "Myscitismes" from 1985.
Again I want to warmly thank Axel and Mitra for their inspiring music and their generous politics of sharing.

VOX PoPuLi! / VOX 231 - Ébats Spirituels

Audiofiles
Label : Nostalgie De La Boue [ndlb#23], Ivory Coast, 2013

After more than half a decade of alternative / independant / post-industrial / experimental music blogging, it seems obvious that french band Vox Populi! is very much cherished by many of us. The good news is that it is reciprocal : Vox Populi!'s frontman Axel Kyrou and his life/musical partner Mitra Khalatbari are some of the most blog sharing supportive artists I know. As a result, the nearly complete Vox Populi! discography is available on blogs for free download, especially on Atlantis Audio Archive, The Thing On The Doorstep, Nostalgie De La Boue and Art Of Losing. Some of us even posted unreleased material Axel had especially assembled for sharing on our blogs. See the list below for finding all that.
In the same spirit, Axel and Mitra proposed us to rediscover one of the band's early classics : the split cassette with VOX 231 released in 1986 by Cthulhu Records, "Ebats Spirituels". He remastered the original recordings and added some unreleased material from the same period he recently rediscovered after he had his Revox repaired. Sometimes this year, the second Vox Populi! cassette released by Cthulhu Records in 1987, "Half Dead Ganja Music" (that is in my opinion one of the best albums of the band, if not THE best), should be re-issued on vinyl. That's great news ! But if you ask me this is not enough : I think a large part of the music produced by Vox Populi! during the eighties and early nineties should be re-released on physical format. For example, I'm dreaming of a 5 or 6 LPs boxset on Vinyl-on-demand. And I'm sure I'm not the only one...

Vox Populi! - The Teen Recordings

Unreleased recordings, France, 1979-1981

When I wrote Axel Kyrou that I wished to post the debut Vox Populi! cassette, "Introduction À La Théorie De La Subjectivité Relative", he answered that before I do so, he would like to offer earlier VP! recordings for sharing. He also sent the visual above and wrote the following statement to introduce these recordings :

'The Teen Recordings' were recorded between 1979 and 1981. These are the first and, yet, unreleased recordings by Vox Populi! As the title suggests, I made them during my teens (I'm from 1964), with some help from my elder brother Ariel on vocals, jaw's harp and percussion. I play synth, radio waves, video games, tapes, bass, guitar, jaw's harp and voices. I must say that we had a very encouraging family environment. Our father Ado was a great fan of any kind of unusual and extreme forms of music. I remember very well my father's PA being blown out by one of the first Whitehouse recordings ! He was a TV/film director and a writer. My mother Mireille is a musician and she had worked under Pierre Schaeffer's direction for a few years at the institution that became soon after the IRCAM. For sure, they were on our side and they did help in many ways. A big Thank is due to them.
I hope you'll enjoy these goofy DIY recordings made with very little means.
Wishing to you music lovers all the best,
Axel, for Vox Populi!

PS : apart from Nostalgie de la boue, you'll find many other VP! releases on 3 other musical blogs :
http://thethingonthedoorstep.blogspot.com/

It is our deliberate policy to make most of our music freely available. Vox Populi! returns to Populi, so...

Vox Populi! - La Cathédrale Morte

Cassette, C40
Label : Cause And Effect, US, 1985

"La Cathédrale Morte" is one of the rarest Vox Populi! releases. Thanks to Axel Kyrou for the cover's pictures !
Vox Populi! was one of the major bands of the 80s french post-industrial music scene. After their last vinyl release in 1989, many thought they had ceased making music. But they are still active today, searching labels to release both early and new material :

In 2007, a retrospective Pacific 231 & Vox Populi! CD, "Cthulhu Revisitation", has been released by Monochrome Vision, including old and new material :
