At the end of the 80's, Gregoire Charbey exchanges tapes as a hometaper in high school, in a spirit of tinkering with organs, toys and delay pedals, under the name of SPIRITUS NAEVUS, then through the micro label EXPREL, in the early 90's. The sound is already experimental, soaring, made of layers, oscillations, textures. Spiritus Naevus participates in many compilations and some concerts. At the same time as music projects for short films, documentaries and shows, and inconclusive experiments in purely digital universes, the interest for gliding, slow and dark music is reborn with GURU BOBOL. It's a return to analog sounds, to free experimentation, to improvisation, a more assumed music, without intermediary and very little mastering. The sound sources are recorded on a 4-track cassette, in mono output like the amp on which everything comes out. The use of looper allows to include acoustic sounds, the superimposed layers of voices humanizing the electronics by haunting murmurs. The names of the pieces evoke, in fictitious vernacular, places, people, sensations. These onomatopoeic sonorities resulting from random combinations leave the music without objective explanation, without common reference point. The visuals that accompany the music are mainly borrowed from a parallel plastic work, made of mud, dry grass and sand.
ESOGRIPHE is composed of 7 tracks in direct take, improvisational pieces cut in a fat and abundant raw material, but which knows neither beginning nor end. The arrangement of the tracks between them tries to organize an intelligible journey, despite the flow, the accidents and the oscillations.
